Constraint of International Student Admissions
Effective January 1, 2025, the Australian government will impose a cap of 270,000 new international enrollments annually. Under the scheme, 145,000 places will be allocated to public universities, 95,000 places to vocational colleges, and 30,000 to private higher education institutions. The decision was majorly propelled by concerns about the task of upholding record migration and escalating housing prices.
Revised Working Hours for Student Visa Holders
Australia has reinstated work hour conditions for international students. Visa holders under the student category will have now been restricted to working 48 hours per fortnight. Recent enforcement has been instructive about the danger of working over this limit, with revocations of visas.
Introduction of the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL)
In an attempt towards making a better match between immigration and labor needs, Australia decided to create the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL). This comes into effect from December 7, 2024, replacing prevailing occupation lists with an attempt to focus specifically on occupations in demand. The Subclass 482 visa category, existing under the new Skilled Independent Direct (SID) pathway, enables employers to sponsor skilled workers in occupations listed on CSOL for up to four years.
Requirement for Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) in Visa Applications
Starting on January 1, 2025, international students lodged applications for Student visas while inside Australia are required to include Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) with their applications. Letters of Offer will no longer be applied for onshore applications. Any application submitted without a CoE will be considered invalid and will not be processed.
